Take Care presented perspectives on care-giving of the elderly, including the perspectives of family members, nursing assistants, the corporate control of elder care in America and the health and human issues of aging.
In 2008, I met Nora Patterson and Blondie Harmer, caregivers working in North Miami Beach, about 50 miles from where I grew up in Homestead, Florida. I was very moved by their profound sense of empathy, their toughness and their inner strength. From this I forged ahead with the idea to bring their stories to life on the stage. Danielle Dresden and I conducted workshops and interviews with the care-giving community, clients and their families in Wisconsin, Chicago, Georgia and south Florida. Take Care, a multi-disciplinary play, resulted. It premiered in 2012 at the UW-Marathon County in Wausau, Wisconsin and was also performed at the Overture Center in Madison, Wisconsin, and at the Last Frontier Theater Conference in Valdez, Alaska. Nora and Blondie were flown to Madison to see the piece in May of that year.
